Sunset Last Night

Haze from brush fires in Siberia and sand storms in Mongolia are tinting Alaskan skies.

Paw Prints

Frieda left these in the snow under the Dodge pickup as she searched the front yard for any sign of the first grass shoots of spring.

Ah, Springtime in Alaska!

So, I *really* wasn't expecting to wake up to three inches of snow this morning.

I mean--I know it is still April and anything is fair, but just last night I was happily playing in the melt water in the driveway, creating clear pathways for the flowing water with the hoe.

Then this...

It continued to snow with such determination that I figured I should go into town to run my errands early in case the road into our subdivision got too bad later in the day.

As it was, just getting out of the driveway and to the highway was dicey in places. But by the time I got to the bottom of Baycrest Hill, the snow was melting on the roadway.

I hurried through my errands but had to stop and take a picture when I saw these two moose cross Main Street and walk across the parking lot at NAPA.

Just another Spring day in Alaska...

Serene Scene

It seems that the only times I am well-placed to capture a sunset are those evenings when I am at work. The lengthening evenings give me a chance to mark the subtle colors that paint the sky and reflect off the faces of the mountain across the bay.

Dusk over Kachemak Bay

The small previews here don't do these scenes justice. Click on the photos for a larger version of dusk over Kachemak Bay and the pale post-sunset sky over Bluff Point as seen from the airport.

April's Quickening Pulse

Denny complained that it was *zero* when he went outside to get wood this morning. By the time I had roused myself from bed, the temperature had begun to creep up to a more reasonable level.

Still, typical Spring weather, especially under clear skies, brings freezing at night and thawing during the day.

It makes it hard to decide what to wear to work, as it is warm when I leave for work and cooling as I come back home.

I came home a few hours early this evening. An eagle flew over the parking lot as I was unlocking my car, so I snapped this picture.

All In A Day...

I took these photos on my trip into town to work and back home afterward.

It is trite but true--if you don't care for the weather around here, just wait a while.

Heading out from the house, I encountered snow and fog along our little road. But after going just a mile or so, the clouds began to open up.

By the time I was descending from the bluff into town, the sunlight had broken through and was coaxing steam-fog from the wet ground and roadway.

Throughout the afternoon, snow flurries moved through the area but about 8 pm the skies cleared behind the cold front and by the time I drove home, I could take this photo (blurry because I was driving) of the sunset to the northwest.
