April's Quickening Pulse

Denny complained that it was *zero* when he went outside to get wood this morning. By the time I had roused myself from bed, the temperature had begun to creep up to a more reasonable level.

Still, typical Spring weather, especially under clear skies, brings freezing at night and thawing during the day.

It makes it hard to decide what to wear to work, as it is warm when I leave for work and cooling as I come back home.

I came home a few hours early this evening. An eagle flew over the parking lot as I was unlocking my car, so I snapped this picture.

All In A Day...

I took these photos on my trip into town to work and back home afterward.

It is trite but true--if you don't care for the weather around here, just wait a while.

Heading out from the house, I encountered snow and fog along our little road. But after going just a mile or so, the clouds began to open up.

By the time I was descending from the bluff into town, the sunlight had broken through and was coaxing steam-fog from the wet ground and roadway.

Throughout the afternoon, snow flurries moved through the area but about 8 pm the skies cleared behind the cold front and by the time I drove home, I could take this photo (blurry because I was driving) of the sunset to the northwest.

From the Overlook

A week into official "Spring" and the vista from the overlook at the top of the bluff still speaks of winter.

Spring Equinox

Baycrest Overlook

More snow today. Only about an inch or so accumulation but enough to freshen the ground cover.

Spring comes slowly in Alaska.

I stopped on my way into town this morning to take this picture at the overlook.

Pheasant

Our solitary pheasant is showing his breeding colors and crowing from the top of the wood pile but so far we have seen no sign to prove that he isn't the only living pheasant on Bluff Point.

We call him our "chicken" and he hangs around all winter taking advantage of the sunflower seeds we put out. One year I thought I would treat him to some chicken "scratch" feed but he turned his beak up at it.

he just prefers the sunflower seeds.

Cross-Tracks

Signs of the pheasant on our back deck this morning.

Looks like he was confused...

It's Been A Long Winter

The marquee at the local theater made me smile.
